Once you have purchased a microSD card, you need to set it up properly with your Switch. This step-by-step guide walks you through the entire process from insertion to data transfer.
Step 1: Prepare the Card
New microSD cards are ready to use out of the package. If you want to format it on a PC first, use exFAT (64GB+) or FAT32 (32GB or smaller). Do not use NTFS — the Switch does not 支援 it.
Step 2: Insert the Card
- Power off your Switch completely (hold the power button and select Power Options → Turn Off)
- Open the kickstand on the back of the console
- Locate the microSD card slot under the kickstand
- Insert the card with the label facing toward you until it clicks into place
- Close the kickstand and power on the Switch
Step 3: Verify Recognition
Go to System Settings → Data Management → microSD Card. You should see the total capacity and free space displayed. If the card does not appear, remove and reinsert it, ensuring it clicks fully into place.
Step 4: Move Games to the Card
Navigate to System Settings → Data Management → Manage Software. Select a game and choose Archive Software or Move Data Between Storage. You can transfer game data from internal storage to the microSD card. Note that save data always remains on internal storage and cannot be moved.
Step 5: Change Screenshot Destination
Go to System Settings → Data Management → Manage Screenshots and Videos. Change the save location to microSD card. All future captures will be saved to the card automatically.
Step 6: Regular Maintenance
Every few months, remove the card and gently clean its contacts with a soft cloth. Check for file system errors by inserting the card into a PC and running chkdsk (Windows) or Disk Utility (Mac).
Summary
Setting up a microSD card is straightforward. Insert it, let the Switch recognize it, and transfer your data. With the card in place, you can download games freely without worrying about running out of space.
