Why does spraying a liquid into your analog stick fix drift? The answer lies in how the stick mechanism works and what contact cleaner does at a chemical level.
How an Analog Stick Works
The Pro 컨트롤러 uses a potentiometer — a variable resistor — to detect stick position. Inside each potentiometer, a wiper slides across a carbon resistive track. As the wiper moves, the resistance changes, and the 컨트롤러 reads this as a directional input.
When the stick is at rest (center), the wiper sits at a specific position that produces a neutral voltage reading. Any deviation should only occur when you move the stick.
The Three Causes of Drift
1. Carbon Dust Contamination
Over time, friction between the wiper and the carbon track generates fine black dust. This conductive dust accumulates on the track and causes false resistance readings. The 컨트롤러 interprets these false readings as stick movement — that is drift.
2. Foreign Debris
Sweat, skin oils, and airborne dust enter through the gap around the stick base. These contaminants interfere with the wiper’s contact and can create intermittent shorts.
3. Mechanical Wear
The spring that returns the stick to center can weaken over time. Physical wear on the carbon track itself can also create uneven resistance.
Why Contact Cleaner Works
Electronic contact cleaner is a solvent blend (typically heptane or similar hydrocarbons) with a small amount of lubricant. When sprayed into the stick mechanism:
- Dissolves contaminants: The solvent breaks down carbon dust,油脂, and oxidation
- Flushes debris: The spray pressure physically pushes dissolved particles out
- Leaves a protective film: The lubricant component reduces future wear
Isopropyl alcohol (99%+) works similarly but lacks the lubricant component. It is safer for circuit boards but may not provide long-term protection against wear.
Why 70% Alcohol Is Not Recommended
Standard 70% isopropyl alcohol contains 30% water. Water can cause corrosion on the metal contacts and may not evaporate completely inside the confined stick housing, leading to short circuits.
